Here are some hints and tips to get your home prepared for a romantic night in: -
DECLUTTER
There is no greater mood killer than clutter – put everything back in its rightful place. Toys, paperwork, books, etc. Collect any mugs and dirty lunch dishes and get them loaded into the dishwasher and out of sight. Give surfaces a quick wipe to remove any dust and stains.
KITCHEN WORKTOPS & FLOORS
Once the kitchen worktops are cleared, give them a quick wipe down with a kitchen or bathroom spray and a nice clean cloth. Personally I like to use white vinegar and water, it cuts through grease and leaves a streak free surface without the streaks often left with regular cleaning sprays. Don’t worry, the vinegar smell doesn’t last, it disappears in no time. Buff with a paper towel to finish, if necessary.
A light touch up of floors with a quick vacuum and a swift mop will finish it off and make the whole room look and smell like you really put the effort in. My ‘go to’ is the Flash Speed Mop, there’s no messing around with mops and buckets and you can just dispose of the dirty used cloth without splashing dirty water over your nice clean sink.
STOVE & SINK
Mix some baking soda in a small bowl with enough hydrogen peroxide to make a paste. Scrub with the rough side of a sponge (not too hard otherwise it may scratch) and the grime should come straight off. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and buff with blue roll or kitchen roll to avoid streaking.
CREATE A RELAXED ATMOSPHERE
Turn down the lights, switch on the table lamps and ask Alexa to play some soft music. Light some candles… it doesn’t get more romantic that soft scented, flickering candles.
THE BEDROOM - WHERE THE 'MAGIC' HAPPENS
Gather up the laundry, clear any wet towels from the bathroom, put away any clothes, shoes and clutter. Don’t forget those strewn over chairs or those on a coat hanger on the bedroom door!
Make sure the bed is made and plump those pillows. The bedroom should be a stress-free oasis! Pop some chocolates on the bedside table, or chocolate-covered strawberries and champagne if you have the time. Enjoy a little romantic ‘Happy Hour’ before dinner.
So, the evening went well, kind of!?
Nothing can ruin the night quite like a spillage or a stain on the carpet. Be primed and ready to take action should the inevitable happen. We have a few cleaning remedies to help you with your Valentine’s clean up: -
RED WINE
Probably the most intimidating of common Valentine’s stains because of the colour. Don’t let it phase you, with the right cleaning technique and a rapid response you can remove red wine stains from the carpet.
Pour white wine on it. JUST KIDDING! Who wants to waste wine?
Instead, mix two cups of cold water and a tablespoon of washing up liquid and sponge the stained area with the solution until the stain lifts. After cleaning, use a clean sponge with cold water, then blot until dry. You can use vinegar as an alternative to washing up liquid on carpets, and don’t forget Zazzoosh! which is also great for carpets.
For tablecloths or clothing, sprinkle with salt to stop the wine stain from setting and splash a bit of soda water to remove the stain, using a cloth to dab as you go. Wash afterwards as you would normally do.
CHOCOLATE
If only chocolates would melt in your mouth and not in your hands!
You can begin by scraping off hardened chocolate. Small items of clothing can be placed in the freezer for approximately 15-30 minutes to make the scraping process easier.
If it’s upholstery or furniture we’re talking about, then you can gently scrub the mark with a sponge soaked in cold water and washing up liquid. Gently scrub until the chocolate stain disappears. I have an amazing stain remover product called Zazzoosh! for carpets and upholstery. It removes stains and leaves it smelling fresh.
CANDLE WAX
A heart-warming glow can quickly become a hot waxy mess if you have a love of candles! Whatever you do, do not try to clean up warm wax immediately. Wait patiently for it to set then try to remove as much dried was as you can with a flat knife. Afterwards, using an iron set on the lowest temperature, place a cloth over the stained area and gently iron to lift the remaining wax spots.
Top Tip:
Pop candles in the freezer for a couple of hours before your next romantic date! They will drip less and burn much slower.
LIPSTICK
Lipstick on your shirt, no problem. Don’t just throw it in the wash praying for a miracle. Pop out the Vanish, or create a paste with a little bit of laundry detergent then rub it onto the lipstick stain. It should wash out more easily on a regular wash.
You're welcome!
